Shelbia
Hatten paints with a purpose – to capture the light and color in the
manner of an impressionist. Her favorite medium is watercolor. The
artists having the greatest influence on Shelbia’s paintings are Van
Gogh for his use of color and movement; Georgia O’Keeffe for her
magnificent flowers; Walter Anderson for his patterns; and Wyatt
Waters for his brilliant use of color.
Shelbia believes in challenges, and her goal is to make every
challenge an opportunity to learn and grow while achieving the
satisfaction of making an effort to accomplish the targeted goals. She
is a strong believer in that, “You only fail when you refuse to try,
and you are a winner every time you try.” She is dedicated to helping
the next generation discover art.
Shelbia is a native of Sumrall, Mississippi; resided in North Carolina
during her early school years and then returned to Mississippi at the
age of fourteen. Although she became interested in art at an early
age, she began her serious study of art after her marriage while
living in Florida.
Shelbia graduated with honors from the University of Southern
Mississippi where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with
an emphasis in Art Education. She obtained her Gifted Certification
and Master of Education with an emphasis on Studio Art and Sculpture
from William Carey College. Ms. Hatten presently teaches Gifted Art at
Oak Grove High School located in the suburbs of Hattiesburg,
Mississippi. She has received numerous awards in Juried Art Shows in
