Born and raised in Winona, Mississippi, Joe Townsend and wife, Marsha,
have two children, Spence and Davis, who are both musicians and artists. His
hobbies include golf and playing guitar.
Joe took art lessons as a child from Mrs. Sarah Baskin in Winona and always
enjoyed coloring and drawing as a child and was encouraged by parents, teachers
and family members in the direction of art. He graduated from Mississippi State
(BS, 1974) and University of Southern Mississippi (BS, 1981). Joe is now a CPA
and has been the comptroller for the City of Hattiesburg, Mississippi since
1985.
Townsend uses watercolors to paint primarily architecture and landscapes. He
believes he has been influenced by the Wyeth family of painters, the
illustrators, Edward Hopper, western painter, Maynard Dixon, and the 19th
century impressionist artists. Joe greatly admires Mississippi watercolorist,
Wyatt Waters and has been influenced by him in many ways. His hobby was “brought
out of the closet” by Patti Hall and friends at the Hattiesburg Arts Council at
a show in 2002 and a follow up in late 2003.
